The  Unusual Suspects: Voices of Reason?

By Ryan Stevens

Oh, comic books. You’re such a rich and engrossing medium, full of diverse and interesting characters, some much more interesting, and some much more diverse than others. Here in The Unusual Suspects, we’re going to discuss a few who primarily fall in the latter category. After a short hiatus (by the comic industry's standards), T.U.S. is back in full force, and today we'll be taking a look at some characters who are not afraid to look at somebody like Stilt-Man or The Riddler and ask "Are you serious?" Today, we are examining some of comicdom's primary voices of "reason". And when these guys are the voices of reason...you must be reading a comic book.

Howard the Duck

Whatmen #1

First off, we have a favorite of mine, whose spotlight in T.U.S. is long overdue. Howard the Duck is a product of the 70's (another one!) created Steve Gerber in the pages of Man-Thing. Howard comes from an alternate world called "Duckword", which is inhabited by evolved ducks. Howard was pulled into the Marvel Universe through a series of confusing circumstances involving Man-Thing, the Nexus of Realities, "Dimensional Stepping Stones", and someone called "Thog the Overmaster of the Dread Realm Sominus". I kid you not.

I suppose all that really matters is that Howard was pulled into the Marvel Universe, in Cleveland Ohio, no less. He met a model named Beverly Switzler, and became romantically involved with her. Herorealm is not responsible for any mental anguish you or a loved one may suffer from reading the above statement.

Howard the Duck has also had numerous run-ins with the sinister "Doctor Bong", whose superpower is altering reality by whacking the bell on his head with a mallet.

The best thing about Howard is that, being from a different world, he is a bitter and cynical old duck, whose stories often serve as biting satires for both the real world and the comic industry, such as a 2001 min-series where Howard was turned into a rat, underwent parodies of Image series' like Witchblade and Preacher, and met God while in hell.

Howard still lives with Beverly in Ohio, and was even seen brandishing a gun against skrulls during the Secret Invasion.

Ambush Bug

Doctor Doom and the Masters of Evil #1

Next, we have DC's prominent satirist, Irvin Schwab, the Ambush Bug. The origins of this absurd "Super hero" is as follows: Brum-El of the planet Schwab placed his wardrobe in a rocket so that it could escape the dying planet, but the rocket was intercepted by a giant radioactive spider from space. The only pieces of clothing to survive were the Ambush Bug costume, and Argh!Yle!, an argyle sock with a Dr. Doom-style mask.

I swear this is true. Irvin Schwab found the suit when it landed on earth, and became Ambush Bug. And the JLA really wish he hadn't.

Ambush Bug actually began as a supervillain, but after being completely ineffectual as one, he decided to change to superheroics, which he really isn't much better at. He considers himself Superman's friend, which irks the Man of Steel to no end. Ambush was briefly a member of Firestorm's JLA during the 52 series, but the majority of that team was killed on a mission. His suit allows him teleport, and Ambush Bug is also prone to bouts of dumb luck.

A largely absurd character, Ambush Bug was created by Keith Giffen as a means to poke fun at the comic industry.

Secret Invasion: Dark Reign #1

Ambush Bug actually realizes he's in a comic book, and often references events from stories in comics from different publishers. Ambush Bug is currently in the middle of a mini-series called Ambush Bug: Year None, which has largely parodied just about every recent event in the comics industry.
