Title: Top 25 Artists
Post by: Jimmy T on Mar 29, 2025, 07:06 PM
Discussing with Perry, he said he wasn't sure if Jim Lee was in his top 10...maybe not even Top 25 Artists, and I said "Do it. Write'em down."

So, I did first.

Ryan Ottlely
Tom Grummett

Yes you did, and I need to do this. May get to it tonight, maybe

This is the guy that reminds me of Jim Lee/ Not all the time, but a lot. Good detail, though a little static in his figures at times. Not on the same level of static as Nicola Scott or anything, but yeah, at times. It will be interesting to see if he looks the same to me on Hush 2

Okay, gonna have to make several passes at this, time wise, for artist that I enjoy more tan Jim Lee, but here is the start, at least
;D

Much like Jimmy, there is no particular order once I get outside my top 3 (even that top 3 changes positioning at times, though they stay at the top while doing so ;)), but the rest are just alphabetical...
And yes, I am putting at least two "clone" artist on my list (Sinnott and Andru), because I still enjoy them more than Jim Lee. And again, I am not trying to knock Jim Lee. He is a great artist, for sure, no doubt about it, but this is just a list of artist that I know I prefer. Not knocking down Lee as an artist, just praising MY artists
:)

1 - John Buscema
2 - George Perez
3 - Jack Kirby
Arthur Adams
Neal Adams
David Aja
Ross Andru
Sal Buscema
John Byrne
Greg Capullo
Olivier Coipel
Gene Colan
Darwyn Cooke
Gene Day
Steve Epting
Keith Giffen
Jean "Moebius" Giraud
Michael Golden
Tom Grummett
Stuart Immonen
Mikal Janin
Phil Jimenez
Kelly Jones
Andy Kubert
Joe Kubert
David Mazzucchelli
Todd McFarlane
Chris Mooneyham
Dan Mora
Mike Ploog
Keith Pollard
Joe Quesada
Frank Quietly
Ivan Reis
Esad Ribic
Darrick Robertson
John Romita Sr.
Alex Ross
Bill Sienkiewcz
Marc Silvestri
Joe Sinnott
Paul Smith
Walter Simonson
Kurt Swan
J.H. Williams III
Bernie Wrightson

I will also add John Romita Jr and Frank Miller to the list, but only their older style, so not sure they would qualify for being under the "prefer them to Lee" statement
;)

So yeah, I have about 40 artist above Jim Lee... currently. Unless he blows me out of the water on Hush 2, I don't see this changing much

Now as you noted, I originally said that I don't think Jim Lee would be in my top 25 favorite artist, and I think I have shown that he isn't :P ;) , but okay... you want to force my hand, change the game up into ranking my top 25  :P so let me see... I have to kill 21 from my last list... Man, that's hard because it really depends on what some of these guys are drawing and my mood, but... if I have to, I guess my top 25 artist that I enjoy over Jim Lee, again, as of right now ;D would be:

1 - John Buscema

Agreed! For me, though, it was his Hercules mini-series.

How no one even mentioned Andrea Sorrentino is beyond me!

I do really like him, but my eyes find him (like another artist that I really like, Deodato) very repetitive in his work. But yeah, I can see how he is in anyone's "top of" list
:)

I loved Sorrentino on Green Arrow.

Then he did that Batman arc, and every instance of Batman and Joker was just a black/white lift from all of the Batman movies. Ruined him for me.

Not as bad as Greg Land though!!!

I have not. It is in my wishlist on hoopla though!

Sorrentino does a lot... and I mean a lot... of photoshop picture editing that bugs some, but I personally still appreciate the look. Even if it does get repetitive. If you don't enjoy photo reference stuff, you are probably not going to be a fan of most anything he does.

One of my podcasters (who teachers art) call him a complete hack and if any of his students came in with art that looked like Sorrentino, he would fail them. I think that is a little harsh as I like the look (especially on horror titles) and I think his stuff can still be effective story telling, regardless of how much is original
:)
