Title: Weekly Reader, August 18, 2025
Post by: Perry on Aug 17, 2025, 02:34 PM
Even though the Fantastic Four Movie is still fresh in my head, I swear I had not even thought of my pick for this weeks Puppet Master until I read the latest Legion issue. There was something inside that second issue of Legion, the way it was presented more than anything I think, that made me think of this particular comic for this week. It just blasted itself in my noggin' as I was reading that Legion issue. But I don't know, is it coincidence that this week's issue is very... F.F flavored ;D probably not, but I swear again, it wasn't intentional.

And as Jeff reminded me... there is a series called The Sacrificers that we really should get back to  8)

Hulk - Ha, wow, what laughable storytelling this was. Dated as hell, but damn, I just can't stop my love for that team. Yes, I may love them due to them being... inspired by another team, hahaha, but hey, love is love. And their defeat? Ha, awesome

Sacrificers - You never know what you are going to get with this series, and this issue proves that statement true. Can't wait to see how that ending comes into play next issue

Year Zero - Sad to see this one end as I thoroughly enjoyed this mini, even more than the first (mainly due to the art, but hey, the story was good as well), I took a peek into the next volume and while the art was not as grand (how could it have been?), I am still excited to start it

Hellblazer - Back to America!! Papa Midnight learns of John's return and schemes revenge, dosing John with a magical hallucinagen. But to what end...

Ult Panther - Meh, art is weak here, which is typical for Marvel currently. Hoping it is just a fill-in  :-\ Story was fine, though slow moving, which is also typical for Unlimited currently

The U-Foes! Awesome!!!

A time of catching up while it's piling on

DC ULTRA

Detective 1099 -an odd ending to the fountain of youth storyline, but solid nonetheless

Abso Flash 5 - I could drop this. Or rather, I'll flick through the pages to see how this Wally fits into multiverse crossover stuff -cuz, c'mon, that's gonna happen & need to happen at some point, right?

Batman 161 - So he fights his crew. I read this because it's there

Batman & Robin Year One 9 - Cool stuff w/Robin I !

Batman & Robin Jason Todd 2 - Cool stuff w/Robin II !

Batman 441 - Cool stuff w/Robin III ! :D

Wonder Woman 23 - where the hell did this story really come from? LOL! IT's so ...so out there!!

Absolute Batman 10 - insane book. Just insanity

Superman Unlimited 3 - Yeah, Slott could leave already. I'd be fine.

Batman Dark Patterns 8 - I love a good old world story affecting the current paths!!

Legion of Superheroes 316

Supes - Was really, really into this... until the last page. Of all the DC characters, this one is... without thinking of whom else... has to be in my top 5 of ones I hate. Hell, actually, just off hand (which means probably not  ;D), this character may fall in my top 5 of most hated characters in all of comics. And not in the "I want to read this to see what this character I hate does" kind of hate, but in the "I never want to see this character again" kind of hate >:(

History of the DCU -
Spoiler
Okay, so now Cyborg was a co-founder the JLA, then put in stasis until he joined the Titans? BOOOOO. And why does the OG Titans have Robin with long pants?
[close]
???

Abs WW - A grand issue and after that ending, I can't wait for the next chapter of this puppy!!  :)

Abs Manhunter - I was speaking about the Eisners a couple days ago, and I am calling it now... at the very least this title will be nominated for best limited series next year. From the writing, which is top notch to the incredible art design/layouts, this is one of the best comics "on the stands" Hell, this could easily win an Eisner next year... should win it, but there has to be, at the very least, a nomination. This is an amazing comic.  8)

And now....

Superman 28 - great! And also great for the wrong reason! :D

Justice League Unlimited 9

Abso Wonder Woman 10

Krypto 2

New History of DC Universe 2

Green Lantern 25

Abso Martian Manhunter 5 - Perry, everything you say can, and likely, is true. But nothing about this title interests me, I've come to realize. I don't care about this story, the cadence or pace of it, or where it's going-excepting the one page shot that was revealed! Nothing speaks to me, sadly

Mr. Terrific Year One 3

Flash, Bad Moon Rising Special -deals with Starman history w/James Robinson's characters. Maybe check it out for that, if you'd want to see

Green Lantern 25

MARVEL

Thor 23

Deadpool 14

Hey man, like I told Jeff, sometimes things don't hit for everyone. I get it. Hell, I am personally not a fan of the "great" Watchmen comic (and I am in no way saying this Manhunter is on that level, but merely used as an example). And while I am somewhat stunned that you, as an artist, don't see the value of continuing this amazing spectacle, I totally understand that sometimes things just don't connect. No matter how great they are  ;)

Bond - A really enjoyable spy action thriller by Joshua Williamson, with a grand ending that I am looking forward to seeing play out in the next volume. Art was also enjoyable, almost David Aja like, though no-where as glorious.  :)

Sacrifcers -
Spoiler
Pidgeon broke bad!!! Wow, and I thought I was more excited about seeing how Luna's tale unfolded, but now? I am excited for both  ;D

I was never much for the pop art scene.
And I can certainly recognize what he is doing/ the shadows interaction and storytelling movements are really cool.
but I find the project just...bores me.
BUT I'm not a noir, old school detective type fan either. That's what this feels like.
So I'm obviously not calling it bad, not at all! But nothing lands for me to want to see what happens next.

Justice League Red #1... not sure if this is an ongoing series or a mini. Love seeing Power Girl in action. I am not too familiar with this particular GL but the villain reveal at the end has me wanting the next issue.

SUPERMAN #28 - Yes! Good kickoff for the Legion of Darkseid story arc.  I even liked the last page reveal that I know Perry hates. 😁

Incredible Hulk #254 - a silly yet tragic story. It was definitely a story written in the style of the era. I still enjoyed it for what it was.  I wonder if this villainous team ever made a comeback.

Sacrificers 7-11 - Great issues!  I forgot how good this series is.  I really like the different storylines with Pigeon and Soluna.  It is really helping to flush out the other characters surrounding them as well as the main two.

PHOENIX #11 - Ok start to a new arc.  Not sure if it'll keep me reading but having Cable as a guest star has me sticking around.

ULTIMATE BLACK PANTHER #16 - Fair issue for this new arc.  This version of Storm is interesting.

Legion of Super-Heroes #316 - this was a good issue.  I like the substitute legionnaires. I enjoyed this issue as it continues all of the current arcs. It also makes me wish we had added the Adventure comics stories that ran alongside this. So much legion back then!

ABSOLUTE WONDER WOMAN #10  - I did enjoy this issue as much as others. Moves the story along fine enough.

BATMAN #161 - I almost want to bail out on this story. But the art is so cool. I'll be back for more next month!

Hulk 254 - I never knew the U-Foes origin! copying the FF, right on down to the brother-sister combo on the team! :D
Some really great Sal art, some really awesome tortured Hulk & Bruce faces!

World's Finest 41 - I'm a dumb sucker for Bizarro stuff. And this one looks really fun and cool!! Thanks Waid!

New Gods 8 - aww, even a baby can make a grumpy gus Highfather smile :D,. I like and am even surprised that I was so dumb to not think that this wouldn't have ties to Darkseid's Absolute universe!

Trinity 2 - really cute, fun, and ya know, heart warming and sad by the end!

Ha, yeah man, and that is crazy... on a subconscious level. I remember the issue, them being villains that I enjoyed, and I knew they were similar to the FF, but I didn't remember the incredible amount of FF nods that this team represented. Like I said, I didn't even think about them until I read that issue of Legion and I suppose the polar opposite approach of that story, the similarity hidden in the dichotomy, pushed a memory of this issue. And yes Jejj, they show up a good number of times later (in better written stories)

Legion - It's fine. Still I find I rush through this, wanting to get to the other, sister series, so perhaps not the best way to approach issues.
:-\

Hellblazer - Constantine, drugged by Papa Midnight, has massive hallucinations (hands turning to bones, dollars falling from the sky, having his throat slit open by someone trying to eat him and wear his skin) and ends up talking to JFK, whose head is, of course, blown halfway apart. Yeah, I've been there

GREEN LANTERN #25 (STARBREAKER SUPREMACY) - I didn't really like this issue.  I hope this doesn't hold true for the entire crossover.  I think I'm just over all this spectrum stuff. Bummer.

MR TERRIFIC YEAR ONE #3 (OF 6) - I'm out.  Just not enjoying this as much as I had hoped.

JUSTICE LEAGUE UNLIMITED #9 - We Are Yesterday is officially over. I'm ready to go back to a normal DC universe.  All this constant cosmic crisis stuff has gotten old for me.
