Title: Weekly Reader, August 12, 2024
Post by: Perry on Aug 11, 2024, 01:13 PM
Oh sure, when I need a small week I get slammed. Not a "Jimmy getting caught up" slammed  ;D but slammed for me (darn Blood Hunt ;) ). I don't think I have tried to read this much current Marvel in a long time, I wager. May not happen again either. Also weird, kinda, that I am back into the F.F again, but hey, I consider that a good thing... for now
;D

And lastly, I don't think I will be reading much today or tonight, need to get lots of stuff done before trying to get some sleep, so I'm going ahead and carrying over the last two issues from last week as well.

Yeah, my mistake ;D  but yes, I probably would have shortened it anyway ;) . In the same way I never type out "Batman and Superman: World's Finest" ;D  I'm actually shocked I didn't just type out LoSH for the Legion book this week.

I'm skipping Marvel this week....and next week.

Don't care about vampire events.

And I don't know the DC release schedule anymore. :D

I didn't see where you did that yet, so I went ahead and added the list to the DC thread. But my old eyes could've easily missed it, so if you did, just delete what I posted

Bone Orchard: Prelude - Reread
Bone Orchard: Passageway - Reread
Bone Orchard: Black Feathers (issues 1-5) - Reread
Bone Orchard: Tenement (issues 1-10)

**********************************************************

Prelude - A good quick intro into the madness that we are set to dive into.
Spoiler
Don't think we saw the girlfriends name when she called, I can't remember, but I made note of the two main people, Nate and his wife Sarah... oh... and the dog, Russ  ;D Also noticed we get the first sign of "7" in the way of the seven spires.
[close]

Passageway - Reread this one pretty fast last night, and I remembered more as I went. Very Twilight Zone like... no, more like a David Lynch terror movie. If anyone has watched Twin Peaks... or hell his Eraserhead or Mulholland Drive movie (starring Naomi Watts)... this is like a horror version of those. Twin Peaks is a good example, long form, of what I mean. You have no idea what's going on, until the end, where you get the confirmation of the characters situation, you have a resolution to "A" story, you still have no idea what's REALLY going on. Ha. Love that here.. It is very Elder Gods like and I am always down for that (Except for when it is done like The Color Out of Space movie... yuk... Richard Stanley killed a great thing there)

Saga - This is just not the same story for me. I am still enjoying it (I mean come on, what's not to like!), but it has a very different "feel" to it now. That's fine, I understand stories change in weight and identity as they progress, but I miss the epic feel of this title. Still enjoyable, highly, but yeah, I have the sads regardless.

Strange Adademy - It was shit

Doctor Strange - This was fine, good art, but yeah, other than the main BloodHunt title (which I've only read one issue, so that could also turn) Jed Mackay is a solid, but boring as hell writer to me. I just get bored. I feel bad for it, but it is true.

F.F - A very good story of Ben and Johnny. Really enjoyed this and have been lovin' the FF again. At least for the past two issues.  ;D

Dracula - This was even worse shit. Should have been called Blade's Daughter!

Blood Hunters - Mostly, again, shit, but more for the tone and art. The first story was pretty good, A Hawkeye story, written by Mark Russel, that did have me laughing, but... that is the problem. I don't like "funny, haha" vampire side stories when the main story isn't a comedy. The second story, by Christos Gage, was even further pushed into comedy with Man-Wolf, someone I really wanted to read about... but not like this. Then there was a Cloak and Dagger story that was fine. Yeah, just fine. horrible Zenoscope art is becoming the norm for Marvel now and it is bad. Bah!

Well both sadly, and luckily, it looks like Geiger isn't dropping this week (I may have got the week wrong or they maybe late... or they are not longer dropping issues  :o :o), but man, thanks to my reread and first read of all things Bone Orchard, I've read a lot to this point this week and the DC stuff just hit today? I don't see me making it this week

Houses of the Unholy
Geiger #5
Bone Orchard: Prelude
Bone Orchard: Passageway
Bone Orchard: Black Feathers (issues 1-5)
Bone Orchard: Tenement (issues 1-10)

**********************************************************

Bone Orchard - All good, all creepy, strange, interesting, weird... in the good way  :)  and mind blowing'ly large. Thanks again for letting me know about Tenement, Jeff

Daredevil - Just not good. Not sure I can read this title until Miller gets on, but I will try. I think writer Marv Wolfman certainly grew better as a writer the longer he went, but the good ones do. The good was that this is the first appearance of a hero, that I think has a ridiculous costume, but I love the hell out of it; The Torpedo, so it does have that. One thing I didn't know, Klaus Jansen was on inking duties this far back, before Frank Miller came onboard. I never knew that.

although I know most people seem to be very unhappy about it, so much so that I was spoiled on it >:( but... ya know... it isn't going to last, so...
I do admit, however, it does make it easier for me that I don't read that character. Nothing to get mad about for me in that regard.
;D
But still mad that I know SOMETHING about the end now

Oh yeah, no shit!  ;D  ;D  I think it is how they stay afloat, I swear. I just saw that they have at least 13 covers for freakin' Powerpuff Girls #2. Thirteen covers? For the second issue?!?! Of Powerpuff Girls?

*Ahem*
Anyway, I hope the story was good in Quest. Waiting for this and Space Ghost to hit Hoopla in trade and am very excited about both!!

Houses of the Unholy - I am not going to say much here as I want everyone to get a shot at reading it before I discuss, so... yeah. I will say that the colors looked a lot different in this than most of the others. Not just the use of one, saturating color at times, but the over all brightness in a lot of the pages.

World's Finest - A good end to a decent enough, brain-dead, enjoyable read. The art and art direction was the selling point for me, here... and in this arc in general, but I had fun with it. Loved who Bat-Mite ended up looking like:

Dark Knights of Steel: Allwinter - #1 - I liked this.  Surprisingly loved the black and white issue with the twist at the end.  I'm in for this.

Green Lantern: War Journal #11 - Found this particular issue kind of boring.  It probably couldn't help it because it's basically just setting things up for the finale.

Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes (1977-) 251 - I wasn't expecting it but this was a really good issue. And now I remember that this was the issue that made me such a Wildfire fan.  Totally forgot this was the issue with a classic fate of one character. Gonna have to contemplate this for awhile. A+!

I wasn't going to read another Dark Knights of Steel mini, but as I flipped through and saw it was in the style that it was... very Savage Sword'esgue... and the fact that both Jimmy and Jeff seemed to enjoy it (I can't remember if Rodney did... with my bad memory and him reading the darn books when they come out and all  ;)), I guess I will add it.
 :)

Plus, I was able to, uncharacteristically, hahaha, knock out a shit ton of issues this week, so what's one more?
;D
Of course it pushes LoSH back for one more read, but that's okay. I'll get there.

Supe's - Meh. Yeah, I think I am going to take a little break from this for a month or two.

Hellblazer - A very cool "new" character arrives and helps us along the quest. I enjoyed the Winchester Mansion stuff (although it wasn't called that in the book, but a gun maker's wife that designed a crazy ass house... yeah, that's what it was  ;))

Nightwing - Very good recap of events here and a "fun" excursion. Now, with the ending, I say it depends on what they do with this in the next issue that will dictate how I feel about it. If it is from "a distance", then fine, but...
Spoiler
While Bruce said that Dick has pretended to be him before, and yes, that's true, and it worked, having a 26 year old Dick pretend to be Batman, with almost a full face covering cowl and possible padded outfit, is a little different than having a 36 year old, much more muscular Bruce pretend to be Nightwing, with just his eyes masked.

X-Factor #1 was okay. Typical first issue intro crap and a little hard to follow. I will give issue #2 a try but not overly impressed with the roster. They're Marvel's version of the Suicide Squad. Havok is/was my reason to read it. Honestly, X-Force #1 was a better read.

2-in-1 - Yeah... not the best. Wasn't horrible, just a so-so story featuring a character that went nowhere for Marvel, even with this latest attempt. Of course, this style of title is where I enjoyed seeing those very characters I knew nothing about, so I will not rag on it too badly.
Next issue is Iron Man, if I remember right, hahaha, but I also think Ron Wilson is the artist and I've never been a fan of his. I mean he's okay, but more of an Al Milgrim style. Very stoic and boring, mostly. Oh well... maybe I will enjoy the story more than this one, if not the art

House of Slaughter Vol 4 - (Collects issues 16-20)  - I don't know what I think about this arc.  On the one hand, I like the focus on the one character with no arms.  Very creepy over all.  On the other hand, it was hard to understand what was actually happening.  Not sure if that was the fault of the art or the writing.  I still don't quite understand that ending so I'm left perplexed.  Did I like this or not? I still don't know.
