Title: Weekly Reder, October 28, 2024
Post by: Perry on Oct 28, 2024, 12:24 PM
Hey, only one new Marvel issue this week
;D
And, as the DC discord has stopped listing the upcoming DC Ultra releases (well, they are now updating the list AFTER the freakin' app uploads the titles... what the hell is the need in that?), I am using DC's release list for shops to list what I will be reading, going back four weeks to make up for the month delay. Which hey, they had Batman Long Halloween: Last Halloween #1 coming out last week... and it did NOT drop on Ultra, so I have no idea if it will be out this week or... hell... what will be out this week, so if anyone can point me to an actual spot to get the weekly or monthly list, I would appreciate it.
That said, as I never truly know what is hitting Hoopla and now not a hundred percent sure what is hitting Ultra (I will still going by what DC issues (apparently) hit the shops at this time last month), I may be adding or deleting things on both Hoopla and DC for the foreseeable future.

**********************************************************

Killadelphia - A book drawn by an artist I like (Jason Shawn Alexander), on a subject matter I like (vampires), written by a writer I was interested in. This book checks all the boxes, but this is the second time I have tried this series and once again, I am out. Art fits the tone, but... just not for me.

Where Monsters Lie - Ha, okay, this was an odd ass read. A mixture of the series Nailbiter and... ummm... the Tom Hanks movie The Burbs. Haha.
Spoiler
A gated community, where all different forms of serial killers live and are serviced. From the un-stoppable walkers like Jason to the puzzle masters like what is seen in the Saw franchise, to killer puppets to killer clowns. All murdering away after a victim escapes and the the cops arrive to "save" the day.
[close]
It was fun, for what it was, but I'm glad I didn't waste a borrow on it

Ultimate Panther - What the ever loving hell am I reading?
Spoiler
Sure, the "guest artist" didn't help, at all, but this is getting just too damn out there. Not enjoying the Storm-Kilmonger thing, it makes no sense really, and, like its been said countless times, the Ra-Khonshu thing is... confusing. Why would Khonshu be doing... well... its not Moon Knight, which I know is the point, but again, what is the motivation? I really had fun reading the last couple issues, but this one crapped the bed for me. Maybe it was just the art, maybe it was that I read some lack-luster issues prior to reading this... I don't know... you would think those would have made this seem better? Oh well, trying again next month.
[close]
Legion - WOW!!
Spoiler
Maybe it wasn't the writer Gerry Conway telling the artist how to draw, but the dialog says otherwise. Conway showing his pervy infatuation with Alya Ranzz (Light Lass) in this issue by having her stand almost nude in front of her brother in a sheer nightgown in one scene and then later showing us her with her costume pulled down on one side in another panel... I mean... hey, I'm all for some "comic fantasy sexiness", but... this was kinda odd. Also laughed when later Ayla, after getting a warning from Saturn Girl about the upcoming danger, apparently didn't believe her because when the attack happens, she states "Then everything Saturn Girl told me telepathically is true". Hahaha, like she would have lied to you? Haha. And Timberwolf still being written like a subpar Wolverine loner also has me rolling my eyes more and more. Not that he is that way, a loner, but the dialog is so damn poor with him. I am happy to see our good friend Blok making his turn from evil to good here (although it's laughable how quickly he is welcomed in), so that is a shining spot in this... just for histories sake and we do get the "Dark Man" reveal here, so yeah, ended on a higher note than it started, but the art is still subpar here. It's the same artist as last time, so that hindered my enjoyment of this as well.

Almost through this rough patch though.

Batman 153 - I liked this for the most part. Started to lose me when it kept pulling real world politics into it.  But my favorite Batman villain is in it and that part doesn't disappoint.  I'm in for this arc. Got really good at the end.

DC All In Special 1 - No spoilers on this but I am all in.  Loved the first Alpha story and probably would have loved the second Omega story if the art hadn't been so abysmal.  But in any case there wasn't much else to hate and I can't wait to see how a certain time traveler gets out of this!

Last Halloween - Man, so good. If you are a fan of Batman: Long Halloween, and who isn't (a true DC Evergreen), this is a great continuation of that story. I went back and read the zero issue, which was published before Tim Sale passed away, and it seems that both Sale and writer Jeph Loeb felt there was still a story to tell after Last Halloween, and I say they are right! Having Russo as the artist was a brilliant idea. His style, while so different from Sale, isn't really all that different than Sale. Yeah, this is going to be a good 10 issue run, if this first issue is any indication.

JSA - Not a JSA issue, really, but seeing Todd Nauck on art is never a bad thing. The double page splash pages, which there are many, are wonderful to stare at. Story, isn't for me, at all, but Nauck made it worthwhile!

Batman - Was going to bail on Batman, but with Jimenez returning I decided to stay on and try. Glad I did. I am still
Spoiler
excited to see the Riddler in most anything (I've liked almost every iteration of the character),

but I also have trepidations about this new character that arrives. Oh, and what an ending. Someone is serious!

All-In - Man do I have so many thoughts on this. Lots of things to be excited for
Spoiler
(Open JLA enrolment, A new "universe", the Legion, the JLA card)

but lots of stuff that left me scratching my head as well. Not the best, but has me excited about some things!

From Marvel.....NOTHING

DC INFINITE

Flash 13 -all the archangles stuff is over and done, and very self contained. Want a new story, need a new artist!
Legion of superheroes 269-271 - Blok, back in full, and how he becomes a Legionnaire! Never knew it was this early! And Gim's mom becomes President of Earth! Feel like she never loses that position! LOL
Detective 1089 -the end of Nocturne; Ram V's magnum opus of Batman. I enjoyed it!! What a complete long story!
JSA 12 -I'm not crying, you're crying
Action 1069 - All the right Superman in all the sweet spots for me!
Titans 15 - a feel good issue, get everyone right, but it feels weak when it's all about what is coming forth with future Justice League stuff
Shazam 16 - Ugh, not a great All-In issue. The artist is a clean looking John McCrea-which is not a compliment. I may have already quit this book.

Save the money, don't spend it, in preparation for a future week  You know they will always find a way to get that money you would've spent this week, by releasing 12 titles you want on the same week at some point.
;D

Quote from: Jimmy T on Oct 31, 2024, 02:29 AMFrom Marvel.....NOTHING

And I don't blame ya! Crap upon crap on top of more crap this small release week. Not that a larger release week would have been much better  ;)
Marvel has almost become damn near irrelevant in regards to exciting (or even semi-exciting) titles. Very low percentage of good writers and an even smaller amount of good artists. Incredible that they used to lead the pack in finding talent. Now it seems, if you can draw somewhat better than a stick-figure, you're hired as a Marvel artist! "House of Ideas"? Ha, not for a long time. Pathetic.

But hey, as there is no new titles from Marvel, why not try some of that Mystic.  ;)
(And that's just me wishing that just one more unique reader will force them to put the rest of CrossGen up :o )
;D ;D ;D ;D

Well, it looks like none of the new titles that I wanted from Hoopla are going to drop, but I am holding out until tonight to make sure. Sometimes, rarely, but sometimes, I have noticed a later, next day drop. Of course I know what will happen, I have, I think, three "borrows" left and Friday is the start of the new month. The three titles I have listed below will drop, Friday. The day after the ones I've been holding expire
:P

Marvel Unlimited
Ultimate Black Panther #6
Doctor Strange #11 (1974)

Hoopla
Savage Sword of Conan #5
It Happened On Hyde Street: Devour #1
Redcoat #7
Where Monsters Lie v1 (Collects issues 1-4)
Killadelphia v1 (collects issues 1-6)

**********************************************************

Nice House - Yeah, much like I did with Nice House by the Lake, I am making the switch to "trade waiting" this series. Going from issue #2 to issue #3 was so sweet and it helped with the old memory so much, I just can't stay on the monthly path. Me brain no worky too goods, and trying to remember all the different people was hard at first, when I started issue #2, reminding me of why I switched originally with the first series and so yeah... one must know one's own limitations, I guess
:)

Plastic Man - NNNOOOOooooo!!

Justice Society of America 12 - oh ok. A celebration of Stargirls 25th year as a character.  Nice but could have been its own one shot instead of as the last JSA book.

Plastic Man No More! 2 - ouch! This story is rough for our protagonist. I'm enjoying it though. I'm feeling bad for poor Eel.

The Nice House by the Sea 3 - thank goodness each issue has a cast of characters list at the end.  It is hard to remember who everyone is.  I can understand why Perry is switching to reading this collected.  Still, I like the mystery and the introduction of a new possible antagonist is interesting.

Indeed. I just wish my brain would cooperate  ;D and allow me to read it monthly  :'(

And looks like all the things I wanted from Hoopla aren't making it to the reading list this week. I only had two more borrows left (with the main Library) so went ahead and got a couple small trades that I have been interested in reading, but they are books that, if I don't get to them in time, I won't be too upset when they get pulled from my list.

An actual decent end to the story, although it is still crazy ludicrous, that Tharok origin  ;D I mean, what happened again? Haha, oohhh, okay. Gotta love that idea. Yeah, I will say this ended a decent over-all story and had a satisfactory ending. Which with THIS writer (and current artist), that is a bonus!

**********************************************************

B+B -
Spoiler
A fun little time travel, word-hopping story with a kaleidoscope of characters. Some pretty cool stuff here from the initial mystery of the multiple copies of the same body, to the space hoping, to Rann/Thanagar, to the Legion showing up to... just a lot here. I will say that yes, it was really nice, as an art fan  ;) to see Perez's Supergirl bouncing around in her mini-skirt  ;) , but seeing Hal have the same general idea was somewhat creepy. ;D  Only in the way he kept repeating her age and telling himself not to have bad thoughts. Then Lobo... I mean, okay, bottom line it seems like writer Mark Waid has the same appreciation to the character as I do. ;D  "The "S" you jerk"  ;D ;D ;D
I am left puzzled by the Dream Girl stuff though, I assume she is dead or missing in the Legion title at this time? Or maybe I just misread that? Not sure, but if it is the former, I will see it soon enough, as we get closer and closer in our Legion readthrough!!  8)
I will also say that while the art is still top notch, with background and detail work that is absolutely incredible, you can start to see the decline of Perez's art here in 2007. Again, still amazing, but yes, the line work is starting to get a little bit heavier here, not as thin, and sad to think that in a few more years Perez's eyes will finally be a real hinderance to him.
Miss ya, George!
[close]

Cobra Commander - I can appreciate what Kirkman and the gang are trying to do, incorporate The G.I. Joe and the Transformer universes into his Void Rival stuff (well, actually the opposite of that, incorporating his Void Rivals into the Joe/Transformer stuff) and I also really appreciate the vastly different take on this Cobra Commander character, but... I just don't seem to care about it.  :'( I want to like it, I do, but it just leaves me flat as hell. I also worry, after reading more and more, that maybe Joshua Williamson isn't a writer from which I need to read everything. His style is okay, but there are also lots of little things that bug me. Just a personal style, nothing bad, just things I notice that bug me. Now I do think that the subject matter, and me not caring about it, hinders my overall enjoyment of his writing here, so there is that to consider as well. Nothing bad here, hell, there is a lot that is mostly very interesting, especially in its changes, but it is hard to overcome apathy, and that is all I really have for this. If I were reading (or trying to read) fewer titles, I would spend more time trying to get into this new world (and I am still going to try the new G.I. Joe title when it hits), but all the other stuff... just not my sandbox

Lady Bird - This impressed me a lot. I think mainly because I wasn't expecting it. Very cool story and exciting art made this a surprise hit for me. Looking forward to this teams next story, already in progress.  ;D

Mystic - This issue we get the battle of the sisters... kinda  ;) This series is okay, but really wishing the other CG titles would drop as I think I am going to get pretty bored with just reading this title. I honestly don't remember reading this to completion the first time around, so I am sure the same thing happened when it was being published. Maybe I can push through a little longer this go-around however, but I need/want to read more of the bigger universe. I know this company doesn't get the time to 100% wrap up it's universe (thanks to over expanding far too quickly), but it was nice moving back and forth, title to title, back in the day, not just concentrating on one small aspect. I miss Crux, I miss Negation, heck, I even miss the god awful, over-muscular drawings of Bart Sears on The First... give me more titles please!

Dr. Strange - A very cool way to "battle ones demons" :)  as in this issue Eternity has Strange facing off against aspects of the good doctor's own self. His doctor self, his drunkard self... hell even his... ummm... Nixon self (it worked, honestly). Looking forward to the wrap up of this small, but very grand, story arc.
